Uswah — Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 2026
Uswah (أسوة) is built by Al-Maqdisi Productions LLC. We believe your spiritual journey is deeply personal, and your privacy is sacred. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Our commitment: We don't identify you, we don't sell your data, and we don't clutter your experience with advertisements.
Data Stored Locally on Your Device
The following data is stored only on your device using encrypted storage and is never transmitted to our servers:
- Language preference (English or Arabic)
- Notification settings (daily sunnah reminder on/off)
- Onboarding completion status
- Sunnah Journey progress (which daily practices you've completed, streaks)
- Anonymous analytics ID (a random identifier with no link to your identity)
Anonymous Usage Analytics
We collect anonymous, non-personally-identifiable usage data to improve the app experience. This data helps us understand which features are most useful, identify bugs, and prioritize improvements.
What we collect
- Which screens and features you visit (e.g., "Seerah tab viewed", "Ask tab used")
- App version, platform (iOS/Android), and language setting
- Session duration and frequency
- Error reports (crashes, failed API calls) with sanitized details
- Feature interactions (e.g., "category selected", "sunnah completed") — actions only, no content
What we explicitly do NOT collect
- Your questions to the "Ask" feature — we only record the length of your question, never the text itself
- Any text you type or read
- Your name, email, phone number, or any personal identifier
- Your precise location (only country-level from IP, processed by PostHog)
- Device advertising identifiers (no IDFA, no GAID)
- No device fingerprinting
Analytics provider: PostHog (US-hosted).
AI Feature — "What Does the Sunnah Say?"
When you use the AI-powered "Ask" feature:
- Your question text is sent to Google's Gemini API to generate a response based on authenticated hadith sources.
- If your question is in Arabic, it is first translated to English via Google Gemini to match our English hadith embeddings, then the response is generated in Arabic.
- Your question text is also sent to OpenAI's API to generate a vector embedding for semantic search across our hadith database.
- No personal identifiers are sent with your question — only the text of the question itself.
Third-Party Services
- Supabase — Content database (hadith, Seerah, prophets). No personal data sent.
- Google Gemini — AI response generation. Question text only, no PII.
- OpenAI — Search embeddings. Question text only, no PII.
- PostHog — Anonymous analytics. Usage events only, no PII.
What We Do NOT Collect
- No account registration required — the app works without signing up
- No email, name, phone number, or personal information
- No precise location data (no GPS, no geofencing)
- No advertising identifiers (no IDFA on iOS, no GAID on Android)
- No advertising — there are no ads in the app, ever
- No data selling — we never sell, share, or monetize your data
Data Storage
All user preferences and progress are stored locally on your device using encrypted storage. We do not maintain user accounts or profiles on our servers.
The hadith corpus (50,000+ authenticated narrations), Seerah content, prophet stories, and Shama'il narrations are hosted on Supabase (cloud database). This is read-only content — no user data is written to or stored on our servers.
Children's Privacy
Uswah is an educational and devotional app suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children or adults. The app does not require registration or personal data of any kind.
Your Rights
You are in full control of your data:
- Delete all local data by uninstalling the app
- Reset preferences through the app's settings
- Use the app offline for locally cached content (AI features require internet)
Under GDPR, CCPA, and similar regulations, you have the right to access, deletion, and portability. Since we collect only anonymous analytics with no personal identifiers, there is no personal data to retrieve. To exercise these rights or ask questions, contact us at the email below.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date above. Significant changes will be communicated through an app update.

Our Promise
At Al-Maqdisi Productions, we build technology in service of Allah ﷻ. We believe that an app about following the Prophet's example ﷺ should itself be an example of honesty, transparency, and respect for the people who use it.
We chose to make this app completely free — no paywalls, no ads, no data monetization. Your trust matters more to us than any data point ever could.
